How To: Tile a Shower

Cost Calculation

1.Accessibility. Assess the situation. This includes the traveling distance from your shop, the parking availability, the access to the project area( how many flights of stairs, elevators, white carpet etc) that will be required to be covered multiple times to complete your project. This is typically a free service.

2.Site Prep. Write down any site prep needed. Masking off rooms and closets, laying drop clothes, cutting temporary access doorways, installing zip walls. Labor, materials, and access.

3.Demolition.  Record and calculate any demolition needed. Typically for a shower replacement, this would include cutting drywall and removing a fiberglass, acrylic or steel tub/shower.  Include material transportation, labor, and disposal costs.

4.Measuring. Take measurements. Measure the height of all walls, how high the homeowner would like to extend the tile, the width of the shower alcove, the length of both side walls, and the position and size of the existing drain.

5.Framing. Calculate the cost of changing any framing to accommodate the new shower configuration. This includes time, materials, and access.

6.Sanitary Drainage. Calculate the cost of changing the drain position to fit the new shower configuration. This includes time, materials, and access.

7.Water Supply. Calculate the cost of changing the water supply position. Include a new shower valve and framing blocking and fasteners. This includes time, materials, and access.

8.Electrical. Calculate the cost of changing the electrical supply, fixtures, and finishes in the room. Includes time, materials, and access. (The homeowner is responsible for choosing and purchasing the bathroom fan and lighting of their choice.) Add the homeowner portion to NIC of project proposal.

9.Insulation. Calculate the cost of adding insulation for warmth and privacy. Time, materials, and access.

10.Shower Membrane. Calculate the cost of hanging cement tile backer board, Kerdi board, GoBoard, or whatever system the homeowner prefers. Time, materials and access.

10.Drywall. Calculate the cost of hanging and finishing drywall. Time, material, and access. 

11.Wall covering. Verify what texture, paint, color and wallpaper is needed to finish around the shower, and calculate costs. Time, material, and access.  (The homeowner is responsible for choosing and purchasing the final coat of paint or wallpaper.) Include the homeowner portion on NIC list of project proposal.

12. Tile. Calculate the cost of the tile that the homeowner has chosen, and add the cost of installation. Time, materials, and access.

13.Flooring. Verify that existing flooring will be adequate for proposed renovation. If new flooring will be needed, check with the homeowner to ensure that they are able to afford new flooring, and who they would like to have to install the floor. Include on NIC of project proposal.

14.Cabinets. This is typically handled by a local cabinet shop, but verify with the homeowner if new cabinets are needed, who will be installing them, when they will be installed, and that they are aware of the cost that it will add to the project. Include on NIC list of project proposal.

15. Countertops. This is usually handled by a countertop supplier, such as Home Depot, Shade Mountain Granite, or Dubois Granite & Quartz. Verify that homeowner is aware of cost and schedule of installation. Include on NIC list of project proposal.

16.Faucets and fixtures. The homeowner is responsible for choosing and purchasing the faucets and fixtures. It will be included on the NIC listing of the project proposal, along with the required sizing/model information.

17.Heaters. This could include existing baseboard or radiator heaters, hot water or electric, and/or a heat lamp which is included in some models of bathroom exhaust fans. Calculate the cost of any renovations or additions to the bathroom heating system. Labor, materials, and access.

18.Trim. Verify if any trim will need to be removed or installed. Keep trim stored in existing conditioned space to prevent moisture or temperature fluctuations that will affect the quality of the finished installation.

19.Trim Color. Verify color and finish sheen of the trim.  Labor, materials, and access.

20.Shower glass and door. Find a product that will fit the dimensions and appearance of the shower. Include the hardware finish information.  Labor, materials, and access.

21.Mirror. The homeowner is responsible for choosing and purchasing the mirror. Include on NIC list. Labor and access if they wish to have it installed as part of the shower project.

22. Toilet. Homeowner is responsible for choosing and purchasing toilet. Include on NIC list. Labor and access if they wish to have it installed as part of shower project.

23.Towel racks and Accessories. The homeowner is responsible for choosing and purchasing these items. Include on NIC list . Labor and access if they wish to have them installed.
